Many of New Zealand's most loved homes were built around timber windows. Their proportions, colonial glazing bars and the way they sit in the wall are part of the character of a villa, bungalow or cottage. When those windows begin to let in draughts and cold, the choice has too often been to live with them or to lose them.

Escence Wood™ offers another way. It is a new, made-to-fit engineered timber sash that carries modern double glazing and weather seals within a suitable existing timber frame. Where the original frame is sound and worth keeping, it stays in place. Only the sash is renewed, so the window keeps the proportions and character of the original while gaining the comfort of double glazing.

The sash is machined from sustainably grown New Zealand radiata pine, thermally modified for and laminated for increased stability and durability before precision machining. It is engineered to hold its shape, and designed to preserve the look of the original window, with glazing-bead and detailing options selected to suit the home.

Escence Wood is the engineered sash system behind your local RetroGlaze Partner. The Partner assesses the existing frame, measures and specifies the sash, then fabricates, glazes and installs the finished window. You work with a local specialist throughout; Escence Wood supplies the tested sash system they build with.

Specifications
  • Timber: Sustainably grown New Zealand radiata pine, thermally modified (TM230), finger-jointed and laminated.
  • Treatment: LOSP azole, treated to H3.1.
  • Coating system: Two-coat alkyd primer/sealer factory applied, to be completed with a two-coat paint-finish, forming a four-coat protective system.
  • Sash options: 41mm and 43mm.
  • Internal glazing profiles: Classic bevelled, Ogee curved.
  • Insulating glass unit accommodation:
    41mm sash designed for insulating glass units with a spacer up to 14mm;
43mm sash designed for insulating glass units with a spacer up to 16mm.
This enables effective specification of high-performance low-e double glazing, such as the SuperTherm range, available through the RetroGlaze Network.
  • Configurations: Fixed, awning, casement, split-rail.
  • Glazing: Double glazing, specified per project requirements.
  • Weather sealing: Purpose-designed weather-seal system.
  • Durability: The combination of thermal modification, lamination, H3.1 treatment, sealed end grain, the four-coat coating system, compatible adhesives and controlled glazing details is selected to improve dimensional stability and to resist warping, bowing and moisture movement. Durable performance depends on correct installation and maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Performance testing: WGANZ 502, independently tested by All Facade Services (AFS-R1173). Fixed, casement and split-rail (awning) specimens tested to and beyond Extra High and Extreme wind-load pressures. Field testing of defined specimens; not a certification of every size, frame or installation.
  • Manufacture and installation: Sash system supplied by Escence Wood; measured, fabricated, glazed and installed by a participating RetroGlaze Partner.
Scope of use

Escence Wood sash replacement is for suitable existing timber window frames in New Zealand homes and buildings, where the frame is sound enough to retain and a new sash can be correctly measured, specified, glazed, weather-sealed and installed.

The system is available in fixed, casement and split-rail (awning) configurations, independently performance tested in existing timber frames. Suitability is confirmed project by project through inspection and measurement by your local RetroGlaze Partner.

It is not suitable for every timber window. Where a frame is beyond retaining, or a different system better suits the building, your Partner will advise on the right path.

Features
  • Made to fit. A new sash machined to suit the existing frame, specified to preserve its proportions and character.
  • An internal profile to suit the home. Internal glazing profiles are offered in Classic bevelled and Ogee curved, so the new sash can echo the detailing of the original joinery.
  • Built for high-performance glazing. The sash is engineered to carry insulating glass units built with an optimal spacer, up to 16mm in the 43mm sash, which allows specification of high-performance low-e and argon-filled double glazing such as the SuperTherm™ range. The sash sets the depth; the specified glazing delivers the performance.
  • Warmth and comfort at the window. Purpose-designed to carry specified double glazing, improving comfort and the internal glass-surface temperature at the window.
  • Weather sealing. A purpose-designed weather-seal system that reduces unwanted air movement around the sash compared with worn or poorly sealed originals.
  • Engineered for stability. Sustainably grown New Zealand radiata pine, thermally modified, laminated and treated, with a four-coat protective system and sealed end grain, selected to resist warping, bowing and moisture movement.
  • Independently tested. WGANZ 502 performance testing by All Facade Services (report AFS-R1173) on fixed, casement and split-rail specimens, to and beyond Extra High and Extreme wind-load pressures. This is testing of defined specimens and configurations, not a blanket certification of every size or installation.
  • A tested material system. Glazing sealants, adhesives, timber coatings, setting blocks and insulating-glass edge seals evaluated for compatibility (Bostik TSR 610), supported by in-house manufacturing-adhesive testing.
  • Existing joinery retained. The suitable existing frame and surrounding finishes stay in place, generally avoiding the disruption of full window removal and replacement.
  • Delivered locally. Assessed, specified, fabricated, glazed and installed by your local RetroGlaze Partner.
