Timber is prized for its warmth, character and sustainability, but it is also vulnerable to moisture, UV and daily wear. The finish you choose determines colour, sheen, tactility and-most importantly-longevity. Selecting the correct system can reduce maintenance cycles, prevent costly callbacks and keep timber looking its best for decades.
Main types of timber finishes
- Penetrating oils & waxes – easy to apply and repair; highlight grain; ideal for furniture and heritage restoration.
- Hard-wax oils – combine natural oils with wax for better water resistance; popular for timber floor finishes.
- Polyurethane clears – create a tough film; available in gloss to ultra-matt; suited to high-traffic areas.
- Stains & colouring systems – alter colour while allowing grain to show; must be over-coated for protection.
- Exterior timber finishes – UV-stable oils or specialty acrylic/alkyd blends; resist New Zealand’s harsh UV index.
- Burnt timber finish (shou sugi ban) – charred surface adds striking texture and natural fire resistance.
1. Location & exposure
Interior dining tables demand different protection compared with cladding exposed to salt-laden coastal winds. Match the coating system to the environment.
2. Desired look & feel
A beeswax timber finish delivers a soft, traditional sheen, while a high-build clear can create glass-like depth. Sample boards under project lighting conditions before committing.
3. Maintenance tolerance
Penetrating treatments are simple to rejuvenate but require more frequent attention. Film-forming coatings last longer yet need full re-sand if the surface is breached.
4. Timber species
Dense natives like totara or exotic hardwoods absorb finishes differently to soft Radiata pine. Always check supplier data sheets for spread rates and compatibility.
Popular applications & system tips
Dining tables: For the best finish for a timber dining table, consider a two-part hard-wax oil. It delivers food-safe protection and can be spot-repaired without stripping the entire surface.
Floors: Traffic-rated polyurethane or hard-wax oils provide abrasion resistance. Browse specialised options in our flooring finishes section.
Walls & ceilings: Clear matt acrylics minimise yellowing in light-coloured timbers. See wall & ceiling finishes.
Exterior cladding: Select exterior clear timber finishes with high UV absorbers or pigmented stains that slow greying. Explore stains & treatments for proven systems.
Specifications & compliance
Durability requirements for protective coatings are set out in Clause B2 of the New Zealand Building Code. Confirm your chosen product meets its expected service life for the relevant building element. Detailed guidance is available from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) here.
Design palette considerations
- Colour harmony: Match stain tones to adjacent surfaces such as tiles & stones or paint finishes for cohesive schemes.
- Acoustic performance: Perforated timber panels finished with low-VOC coatings can double as sound absorbers-see our acoustic finishes.
- Solid surface hybrids: Pair timber benchtops with durable solid surface materials for wet zones.
Installation & finishing techniques
Achieving a flawless result relies on workmanship as much as product choice:
- Sand progressively to the grit recommended by the finish manufacturer; over-sanding can close grain and reduce penetration.
- Maintain workshop temperature and humidity within specified limits.
- Stir-not shake-finishes to avoid air bubbles on application.
- Apply in thin, even coats; heavy coats may wrinkle or trap solvents.
- Respect re-coat windows to ensure proper inter-coat adhesion.
