The Boulders Elegance

High above Cromwell, New Zealand, The Boulders is an eHaus project that beautifully combines modern energy-efficient design with the rugged Central Otago landscape.  Completed in 2023, the home sits 480 metres above sea level on a steep slope between Lake Dunstan and the Dunstan Mountains, a location that demanded both sensitivity and ingenuity. At the heart of The Boulders’ identity is its use of local schist. Anchoring the building to its setting, the stone echoes the geology of the surrounding ranges and creates a tactile connection with place.  Local schist sourced from Cluden Stone Quarry is complemented by Abodo charred cladding and fine detailing, including bespoke powder-coated aluminium screens. Together, these materials create a palette that is both robust and refined—celebrating texture while ensuring durability in a demanding climate. Featuring an innovative combination of lightweight and solid stone elements, the Boulders showcases a seamless fusion of materials that underscores both durability and refined elegance.
