Built on a former quarry site, the Clyde Street project in Thirroul undertaken by Contractors United, represents a masterclass in transformation and modern urban design.

The project, which includes six townhouses, was recognised at the 2018 Master Builders Excellence in Regional Building Awards for its considered approach to construction on challenging terrain.

According to Danny Mojoski, General Manager at Contractors United, once the initial site trials were addressed, the design brief called for a contemporary aesthetic that would blend in with the surrounding urban environment. From a build perspective, it was essential that the building materials delivered on both looks and performance.

To achieve this brief, a number of Cemintel products, including Woodlands Teak, Woodlands Whitewash and Quarry Urban Grey from the Territory range, alongside Cemintel’s Barestone, were selected.

“With Cemintel’s Territory and Barestone ranges we were able to create a distinct urban look through a unique selection of colours and textures,” says Mr Mojoski.

“The Urban Grey panels are among my favourite selections as the concrete matte finish provides the perfect contrast to the timber-like finishes of the Territory Woodland’s Teak and Whitewash range,” says Mr Mojoski.

Urban Grey is raw and unpretentious. When partnered with Teak and Whitewash from the Territory Woodlands range, the result effortlessly blends nature with modern living.

Performance was also a key consideration when choosing finishes for the project’s exterior, especially with the site’s proximity to the coastline.

Cemintel’s Territory range is built to enhance a home’s performance and resilience from the moment of installation. A ventilated cavity ensures the building remains dry while the machined tongue and groove profile delivers a seamless weather resistant finish.

Each prefinished panel is designed to meet nature head-on, with a platinum coating technology to protect against UV damage and colour fade. Cemintel’s NichiGuard® coating also ensures the panels are self-cleaning and stain resistant.

Barestone arrives similarly prefinished but is designed to weather naturally to blend in with the environment.

“Because the panels are all prefinished, installation is fast and simple. As a builder, what I personally like is that there are no ongoing maintenance requirements for the owner,” says Mr Mojoski.

For Contractors United, the award winning project was the first time the group had utilised Cemintel’s range of cladding solutions. The group was able to collaborate with both the developer and a CSR Cemintel representative to achieve the design and build requirements.

“This project was the first time we’ve worked with Cemintel and we’ll definitely use their products again.  I’m still getting calls asking about what products were used on this project,” concludes Mr Mojoski.

Through innovation and intelligence with cement panels, Cemintel offers a range of products, systems and services that inspire, giving choice and real design flexibility to create striking points of difference.

Unparalleled Design Flexibility

Fibre cement is perhaps one of the most flexible building materials available today.

  • It can be manufactured in numerous panel sizes and thicknesses.
  • It can be cut into various shapes and patterns.
  • It can be compressed for high strength applications.
  • It can be used in acoustic systems.
  • It can be used as a superior wet area lining product.
  • It can be painted.
  • It can be tiled.
  • It can be used for fire resistance applications.

New materials influence the way buildings are defined. Cemintel is responding to the growing importance of external and internal cladding with the release of new prefinished ranges. These ranges respond to the preference for high performance, lightweight materials and the desire for buildings to enhance the environment where we live. From external façades to interior surfaces, these ranges are a reinterpretation of cladding as we know it.

It’s the future of building and it starts now.

An Idea Born From Imagination

The father of fibre cement, Ludwig Hatschek, started to imagine a new building material in 1894. He wanted a material that was lighter than brick, cheaper than slate and better than sheet metal.

In 1900, he achieved his breakthrough with a special mix of fibres, cement, pulp, air and water. The Austrian calls the world’s first industrially manufactured building material ‘Eternit’ and numerous European countries adopted the technology from 1903. Australia first introduced the technology in about 1917.
