The client & her family moved from Auckland to Canterbury, as their heart has always been in the South. They bought a 30-acre property in West Melton with the plan to renovate the existing home. A smaller cottage was built on the property in the meantime, which will then be used for future guests.
The vision was for a luxurious, relaxed, and comfortable space. A kitchen that fits the style of the cottage and serves the needs of transient guests visiting for a skiing or riding weekend. The client loves detail and symmetry so creating a scullery door inbuilt with joinery was a must. When the scullery door is closed, there is a perfect alignment and balance within the space. A smaller pantry unit in the kitchen is used for basic food items which fits their needs and future guests, whereas small appliances and overflow of storage is in the scullery.
The design response was to keep everything light but bring in textures to create a relaxed space, including square panelling, v-groove, reeded glass, and veining which fits harmoniously with the build details. Continuous waterfall end and splashback, paired with brass knurling handles creates a luxurious feel. The clients are tall, so a slightly higher benchtop and microwave was requested. Dekton was used for durability, paired with 30mm panels for a more solid look.
