Interior design by Terry Hunziker, Seattle
Architect – Cheshire Architects

A project like no other, “Whare Wananga” is Maori for “house of learning” and has been designed for New Zealand-born international investor, Peter Cooper, as the centrepiece of his magnificent “The Landing” development in the Bay of Islands. The brief – to create a strong connection with his Maori heritage in this place of cultural significance.

The six bedroom, six bathroom residence is perched on a dramatic hilltop over looking the picturesque Bay of Islands. Design cues suggest the house has been built over time with the sophisticated yet rusticated interior. The house is open, so the flow of volcanic stone is carried from the outdoors through the interior and the palette intentionally muted, to allow extensive artworks and artefacts to be showcased.

Working with natural materials is Bremich’s design strength. Cerused oak was used on the cabinetry, and custom furniture featured Great Plains mohair on sofas and lounge chairs. Strong horizontal timber lines create a sense of calm throughout the home.

A special ageing solution was used to create a vintage effect on a bespoke wine cellar table and side shelf, and blackened steel was used throughout the lounge for custom designed stands and detailing for artwork and frames.

“Spectacular features convey the exquisiteness of materials and craftsmanship…”Interiors Magazine, Feb/March 2015.
