Overview

Set on the pristine Coromandel coastline, Opito Sands demanded design solutions that could balance safety, compliance, and style. HAMR Homes, one of the region’s leading builders, partnered with NZ Windows Whitianga, an authorised UNEX fabricator, to deliver balustrades that would perform in harsh coastal conditions while enhancing the homes’ premium design.

Located in Opito Bay’s newest subdivision, the Kaireka Holiday Home at Opito Sands is a refined two-level retreat blending comfort, design, and durability. HAMR Homes and Whiti Design collaborated on a home featuring four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, elegant cedar and Hardie Stria cladding, and custom high-end finishes, such as a Dimax kitchen, stone countertops, and oak flooring.

Design Challenges

Early in the build, severe weather and the temporary closure of Black Jack Road created significant delays. The team rallied, pushing to recover time while maintaining quality. The coastal environment also presented challenges - wind, salt air, and exposure required balustrade systems that were both corrosion-resistant and structurally sound.

UNEX Solution: Siena Framed Glass Balustrade

To meet these demands, the NZ Windows team selected the UNEX Siena Framed Glass Balustrade for its clean lines and robust performance. Clear toughened glass and powder-coated aluminium framing provide both clarity and strength—durable in harsh marine conditions while preserving the view. A face-fixed installation ensured a sleek footprint.

Fabrication & Installation by NZ Windows Whitianga

NZ Windows Whitianga, an authorised UNEX fabricator, expertly managed fabrication and installation. Their local production allowed precise alignment with the architecture’s specifications. Their team managed site-level adaptations and customised components as needed (e.g., PS1s), delivering a polished, fully compliant installation that matched both design and functional requirements.

The result is a seamless barrier that enhances open coastal views without sacrificing safety or code compliance. The homeowners praised the team’s workmanship, professionalism, and attention to detail - highlighting a build completed only weeks later than scheduled despite early setback
