When Independent Fisheries decided it was time for a larger facility, Apollo Projects was top of mind. We’d built their previous factory in 2007, but with business booming, the company had outgrown the space and needed to upgrade.
Independent Fisheries, which specialises in supplying many varieties of fish and processed seafood products, wanted a large, modern facility to process and store their products. Remembering the quality of their previous project and reassured by Apollo Projects’ experience in delivering cold storage and dry storage solutions, the company turned to us to help make their plans a reality.
Beginning in May 2018, we worked with Independent Fisheries to design and construct a new multifaceted facility. Before construction could get underway, we also worked with archaeologists on the building site. A hospital had previously been located there and the land was listed as historic.
The scale of this project was impressive, with three distinct buildings to be constructed: a freezer and dry store, office, and Environmental Load-Out Area. A core feature of our brief was to ensure seamless connectivity between them all. We also used a range of materials to maximise the buildings’ efficiency such as concrete pre-cast walls, blockwork, iron, and Kingspan cladding.
Included on the site are a load-out canopy to receive and distribute products; apron spaces for forklifts to transport the seafood into the freezer and dry stores; a plant room; parking areas; and modern office facilities complete with kitchen, washroom, and changing facilities for staff.
Not only is the new facility better equipped to meet the company’s growing needs but it also came in well ahead of schedule and under budget – two things that always make handing over the keys so much sweeter.

We are a nationwide Design and Build company with specialist knowledge and experience across verticals as diverse as cold storage, dairy, wine, food and beverage processing, commercial and retail spaces, and recreation and leisure.
Whatever the project, our focus is simple - listen to our client and deliver absolute trust and certainty from the start.
At Apollo, we've never been afraid to challenge the status quo.
When Craig Waghorn and Paul Lloyd started Apollo in 2001, they were determined to break away from the traditional management process and do things differently. They saw an opportunity to partner with clients from the very start, taking their ideas right from concept all the way through to completion – something that was poorly executed in the industry!
Today, Apollo is a leading New Zealand design and construction company with over 40 professional project delivery and support staff across the country. We regularly work with major national companies including Fonterra, Goodman Fielder, George Weston Foods, Ngai Tahu and Lion Co., as well as private owner-operated businesses, sports organisations and Government/Council entities.
Even though Apollo has grown over eighteen years, we’ve never lost our core value that a ‘client’s trust is everything’. Apollo is different simply because we operate as a partner with our clients – our goal from the very beginning has always been to build strong relationships from which we can deliver successful projects.
