Built on a 10-acre site its location was chosen to cater for the anticipated population growth in southern Rolleston, particularly around the new Faringdon residential development.

The school caters for year 1-8 students and currently has capacity for 400 students. Future plans include a further extension to take up to 750 students. Work has started on a new Special Needs Unit which will service the wider Rolleston area. CO-STUDIO's design strongly reflects the school’s requirement for innovative and open-plan shared learning spaces. Students have a variety of environments to learn in from sitting snugly in brightly coloured window boxes to a tiered seating area. These spaces are housed in single-storey buildings with low pitched roofs punctuated with skylights to allow as much natural light as possible.

CO-STUDIO partnered with Southbase Construction to deliver this project as part of the innovation model for the Ministry of Education. A three-stage masterplan providing three new 900m2 teaching blocks. This is part of the innovation model schools which are 1.5 storeys with clerestory windows, steel portal frame and profiled metal warm roof and warm wall construction. Stage one was delivered in 2017, stage two in 2022, with stage three due for commencement in early 2023.

Our BIM model was detailed to a typical LOD 300, leveraging off our iteratively developed standardised design from the innovation model. The efficiencies found within this model and BIM approach has supported the expedited programme.

An Inspired Approach
CO-STUDIO is our architecture practice with a shifted emphasis to solving built environment problems with people. This people-centric approach is inspired by the words of a Pritzker Prize winning architect Glenn Murcutt, describing the best approach to architecture: “We don’t design buildings. We discover them”. This inspired our motto:

Design Through Discovery
Spending the time to listen to you and understand what is important to you, is at our heart. We firmly believe that successful, truly sustainable, and enduring architecture is discovered through a process that fully engages with those who have a long-term relationship with their buildings. Everyone has a key part to play, and our skill is in understanding your needs and those of your stakeholders including tenants, visitors, customers, builders, councils, design teams and maintenance people.

Guardians of the Earth
Protecting the environment is not only important to us, but integral to our operations and services. We recognise the role that architects play to reduce our carbon emissions and commit to working toward net zero carbon for CO-STUDIO projects by 2030. As part of this role, we approach every project with a sustainability lens. We seek to identify the barriers to embrace sustainable solutions, and then work to dismantle them.

If some of our projects and faces seem familiar, that's because we are part of the wider Stephenson & Turner Group. If you've worked with us before, expect the same passion and quality. If you're meeting us for the first time, we'd love to hear from you. We love a good chat (and coffee!)
