Situated in the leafy Mount Eagle Estate in north-east Melbourne, Local House is a contemporary and sustainable dwelling that draws inspiration from the heritage and natural beauty of its surroundings. This versatile home showcases rich texture and distinct character, blending seamlessly with its historical ambiance to create a harmonious connection with the landscape.

Home to a couple who love art and have a great appreciation for design, the pair recently became grandparents and wanted a home where their growing family could comfortably visit and stay. This was achieved through orientation, layout and palette with the help of Zen Architects, an award winning Victorian-based practice with over 30 years experience in designing and developing environmentally and socially sustainable spaces.

Rich in charm, this distinctive home explores the idea of materiality through a combination of stone, textured render and blonde timber finishes. By employing natural materials, the dwelling establishes a harmonious link between the surrounding landscape as well as its interior and exterior spaces, all whilst embodying a modern and timeless aesthetic.

Named ‘Local House’ as the natural material used was sourced from Victoria and Tasmania (Australian Oak from Western Junction Sawmill in Tasmania), the space showcases a plethora of Australian Oak timber used for the cabinetry, joinery and structural timber. Sustainably sourced and manufactured at our world class facility in Heyfield, Australian Oak is ASH’s brand of Tasmanian Oak and Victorian ash (no longer available) known for being a hard-wearing, strong and visually stunning timber available in a variety of applications for a seamless design.
