Merricks Farmhouse: Australian House of the Year 2023
Project Overview: Merricks Farmhouse, an architectural marvel, was crowned the Australian House of the Year in 2023. This stunning residence exemplifies the seamless blend of natural beauty and modern design, utilising Hurford's Shou Sugi Ban for its exterior cladding. Shou Sugi Ban, an ancient Japanese technique, involves charring the surface of timber to enhance its durability and aesthetic appeal.
Design and Aesthetic: The Shou Sugi Ban cladding selected for Merricks Farmhouse showcases a striking charred timber finish, which beautifully contrasts with the surrounding concrete walls and lush greenery. This burnt timber exterior extends into the interior spaces, creating a cohesive flow that blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The rich, charcoal-hued ceilings and walls within the farmhouse exude a sense of effortless elegance and refined simplicity.
Accolades and Recognition: Since its completion, Merricks Farmhouse has garnered significant attention and acclaim. It graced the front cover of ‘Houses Magazine’ Issue 151 in March 2023 and received recognition in the New Residential category at the 2023 Victorian Architecture Awards. The pinnacle of its accolades was being honored as the ‘Australian House of the Year’ at the 2023 National Australian Architecture Institute Awards.
