The clients owned an existing cottage on the site, which they had lived in periodically before deciding to move there permanently. After considering major additions and alterations, they decided best use of the section would be by building a new house and selling the cottage for relocation.
The clients wanted a modern, contemporary look that had individual style and detailing. The orientation of the house and its relationship to the gardens was considered in depth, with a desire to have all the living rooms and bedrooms facing north, getting maximum solar gain and views to the garden. Outdoor living with maximum flow to the living areas was a priority, with a sheltered BBQ/alfresco dining area. This space was enhanced by careful design and placement of a water feature that also gave a dramatic point of interest on arrival before getting to the entrance pergola/bridge.
The house was clad in plastered Eco-Panel, with contrast provided by the macrocarpa pergolas, schist work and Weathertex weatherboards.
In order to irrigate the gardens during low water supply in summer, a bladder tank to collect roof water was located under the deck.
