From the street, the western elevation rises across three clear levels—bagged concrete blocks are punctuated with floor-to-ceiling glazing on both the second and third storeys
Standing seam aluminium cladding is used on the exterior of the third storey.
The master suite sits atop the home,  designed as a crow’s nest; a place where the clients could retreat to that was completely separate from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the house
Thanks to a bespoke cedar ceiling with acoustic panels above it, the house feels quiet despite often being a busy place with different agegroups congregating in the same area.
The traditional nature of the concrete block fireplace brings an elemental feeling into the outdoor space.
The ultimate modernity of this home contrasts with the otherwise traditional vernacular of the streetscape.
The dark cedar ceiling is complemented by a polished concrete floor, white oak veneer cabinetry and a dark grantie benchtop.
The rear entertaining courtyard draws on a close link to the adjoining park and its mature trees.
A central aspect of the interior scheme - the acoustic ceddar batten ceiling - continues seamlessly from the open plan living, kitchen and dining area into the covered outdoor courtyard.
An eathern palette complements the key material aspects.
Perforated aluminium screens allow for differing levels of light to be achieved
The external vertical aluminium screens allow for shelter or sun, as desired.
In the master suite, the bed is oriented towards the morning sun, while the ensuite captures the setting sun.
A dark cedar ceiling complements the lighter cabinetry and concrete block walls.
The bagged concrete block continues seamlessly between exterior and interior.
It is this building’s overt connections to the path of the sun that underscores its success and which allows for a series of beautiful and different experiences of light between dawn and dusk.
Light and dark, shadow and sun are key elements of the design.
Here, a natural, neutral palette abounds.
Mt Eden Modern offers a stunning juxtaposition between old and new, between materials and form, and one that makes a divisive architectural statement in its context.
