Transforming Orlo: A Vision of Relaxed Sophistication
To elevate Orlo and craft a relaxed yet refined ambiance, owner James Klapanis teamed up with McCluskey Studio. Their mission was clear: transform the 1880s red brick structure while preserving its historic charm. The result is a seamless blend of heritage authenticity and contemporary elegance.
Balancing Historic and Contemporary Design
The design process focused on creating connections between the venue’s four spaces while staying true to James’ vision. Key to the transformation was integrating a collection of reclaimed and vintage furniture and finishes to establish a sense of familiarity and approachability. By merging historic elements with modern touches, the team achieved a unique balance that feels both timeless and welcoming.

The Role of Flooring in Setting the Tone
Flooring played a central role in bringing the space to life. Havwoods’ Reclaimed Oak Rill timber flooring from the Relik collection, with its rich auburn colour variations and beautifully textured finish, was carefully chosen to enhance the venue’s heritage feel. The flooring not only complements the wall paneling but also adds warmth and nostalgia, making the space cohesive and inviting.
Layered Textures and Materials for Timeless Appeal
To achieve the vision of an authentic, lived-in space, rugged brick walls were contrasted with finer materials like marble, brass, and amber glass. A decorative accent tile harmonises with the deep burgundy stone of the main bar, while a copper pendant adds warmth, glowing against the bronze kitchen pass. These thoughtful design choices layered varied textures and finishes, creating a space that feels timeless yet fresh.
Creating a Nostalgic Ambiance
The combination of Havwoods Oak Rill reclaimed flooring, rich textures, and vintage-inspired details successfully evokes a sense of nostalgia. Orlo’s transformation demonstrates how the thoughtful use of materials and design elements can pay homage to history while meeting the demands of modern sophistication.
