The Arches

Custom-engineered Finline and Topline postless balustrades, including site-specific PS1s for the building's curved deck areas, on a three-storey apartment complex in Mission Bay. The Arches is a three-storey apartment building in Mission Bay, Auckland, built around a central courtyard and curved decks in a Mediterranean-influenced style. The owners engaged Archaus architects to specify balustrade solutions for the balconies and decks that would meet safety requirements without disrupting the building's design or its views. Working with Archaus and CMP Construction, UNEX designed a custom balustrading system tailored to the building's geometry, producing site-specific PS1s for a range of fixing conditions, including the curved sections. Finline Postless balustrade, side-fixed to concrete, was selected for its slim profile and continuous vertical fins, removing the need for individual posts. Topline balustrade, top-fixed to concrete, and Leada handrails were used across the remaining areas. The result gives The Arches a consistent balustrade line across its curved and straight sections alike, meeting Building Code requirements without a change in the design language from one area to the next.
