By Smith Construction
The Redel Home was designed by Carin Wilson from Studio Pasifika as a 3 bedroom barn with loft.
The client brief was to create a modern industrial barn with a central walk-around kitchen and large open living space.
This unique design used steel portal construction to create the large open spaces, broken up with ply ceilings and feature walls to define the different spaces within. Parahaki Engineering created the steel bones of the structure. The exposed concrete floors and exposed portals provided the industrial look, with cedar battens over a black ply base and negative detail for the wall linings giving definition.Hermpac supplied the cedar elements.
The site was the main challenge, due to its sloping platform and wet ground conditions. Carefully placed drainage and rock wall features were introduced to divert water run-off away from the building in a controlled way. The shingle roof helps gives the barn its unique visage, taking it further beyond the classic barn building style.
Smith Construction worked with the clients alongside Carin Wilson of Studio Pasifika from early in the design process. This helped to create a design that succeeded both visually and practically.
Other suppliers and contractors who were pivotal in making this unique concept work at as a practical, functioning open plan home were Phoenix Windows, Wilson Plumbing, Emerson Electrical and B&H Design.
