Sea View House

This home is an artists retreat; ample glazing to enjoy the ever-changing views, and plenty of wall space to display beautiful art pieces. The home sits happily on its knoll, with unobstructed views of the ocean. Clad in narrow vertical cedar shiplap and horizontal Stria board, the combination is light in colour palette matching its natural surroundings. The brief was to design a home simple in form & streamlined in plan.  To allow for the house to feel comfortable whether it is a full household including the grandkids or just the owner at home. Access was carefully designed to come up and around to the rear of the property so that the living areas get the best of the views and outdoor access. Retaining walls were carefully positioned to provide flat lawn areas, while featuring a lot of the natural rocky outcrops in the landscaped areas. It was important to have some flat lawn on the property close to the living areas for the grandchildren to play and for their dog to roam close to the house. The inclusion of structured planter boxes just below deck level will see the planting grow up higher than this, blending the connection from deck to lawn, thus negating the legal need for balustrades, allowing a full unobstructed view.
