After nine years in the wilderness, Te Raekura Redcliffs School has returned to the Redcliffs community is has served for more than a century.
Referencing the cliffs and moa caves across the road, the street-facing facade of the school is a 60 metre-long, 8 metre-high series of modulating openings and setbacks arranged from precast concrete.
The colour and design of the facade celebrates the school’s unique identity while its sense of permanence acknowledges the one hundred-plus years the school has been in service to the Redcliffs community.
Sustainable materials such as Terra Lana wool insulation, Interface CarboNZero certified and NZ recyclable carpet tiles, phthalate-free Sphera vinyl and Autex products that carry the Declare label, were used where possible.
The school board had several functional requirements for the school which included the provision of agile spaces that could accommodate a variety of learning arrangments.
Located on the edge of the Avon Heathcote estuary, the school occupies a flood hazard zone, which required the buildings to be elevated above ground.
A mix of surfaces makes for dynamic interaction and supplies stimulating experiences.
Timber canopies link buildings together, providing shelter and allowing for natural ventilation and open-space corridors.
Currently the school has capacity for 300 students, however, the masterplan allows for a further 100 students to be accommodated in two 'boatshed' buildings as and when the roll increases.
The impressive playground has become something of a destination, as has the hall, both of which are available for use by the local communtiy.

About the
Professional

Tennent Brown is concerned with people, how our buildings and environments will affect their experience. We design to uplift the quality of life, of work, play and wellbeing of those the buildings serve. Architecture is built around people, and every design is an individual's or organisation’s story: their hopes and aspirations for a building that is their own.

People entrust us with realising some expression of themselves, to translate that into built form. We take that seriously. Ours is an architecture of listening and understanding: a humanist architecture.
