The Pink Bach.

This coastal retreat in Matapouri, Northland, represents a thoughtful reimagining of the classic Kiwi bach. Set just 200 metres from the white sands of the beach, the home underwent significant renovation in 2024–25, blending the nostalgic charm of a family holiday spot with a refined, contemporary aesthetic.

Designed to comfortably host up to 15 people, the layout supports communal living and connection, while still offering quiet corners for retreat. At the heart of the home is the design work of Stu and Melissa Bowman of Apartmento, whose 30-plus years in interior design are evident in the bespoke furnishings, curated finishes, and relaxed styling. Their approach brings a sense of both comfort and sophistication, staying true to the bach’s original spirit while elevating the experience for modern living.

Two generous decks extend the living areas and create fluid indoor-outdoor spaces that respond to the rhythms of summer life - long evenings, shared meals, and relaxed afternoons in the sun. The open-plan kitchen, dining, and lounge areas are oriented to take in the late light as it fades behind the hills surrounding Matapouri, grounding the house in its landscape.

The addition of a separate sleepout introduces a quieter, more contemplative element to the property. Designed to offer flexibility, whether as a workspace, reading room, or creative studio, it complements the sociable energy of the main house while providing a place for solitude and focus.

This project reflects a deep respect for both place and tradition, preserving the familiar essence of a coastal family getaway while allowing for comfort, creativity, and connection in new ways.
