The Brief:

The existing kitchen was 20 years old & required an update.
The kitchen and the associated dining/living space was very open plan and whilst the existing galley
style layout worked, it was in need of some tweaks and the addition of a couple of key areas.

  1. Butlers pantry to shield the Pantry and fridge area, to also provide a prep space and some extra
    storage.
  2. The kitchen lacked a substantial seating area, so it needed a space where the family of 4 could sit
together or guests could mingle around.

These two areas were a must on the want list and it was a desire to have a zone that could be
dedicated to entertaining which would allow guests to easily access drinks, glasses etc.
The kitchen was to stay in its current location and the existing floor tiles were to remain.

Project Outcome:

Underwood kitchen project features a contemporary remodel of a 20 year old kitchen, transforming the dated space from an eyesore to the star of the home. A stunning entertainers delight, where the owners are proud to bring guests to and a functional space where a family can congregate and make new memories within the newly revitalised hub of their home.

The original kitchen felt small due to the heavy use of timber veneer, dark granite bench tops and obstructing oven stack (featuring an oversized microwave cabinet). The island bench was originally designed without a functional seating area, which was a missed opportunity considering the kitchen is the heart of the home and the island bench is considered a flexible space which can serve as a
central meeting point for families to relax, enjoy meals and a beverage or a place for children to do homework while mum or dad cook a meal.

The area surrounding the fridge was transformed into a butlers pantry and the Island bench was moved about 1 metre up allowing for the butlers pantry to be created, the second entry point to be retained and a new seating area created.

An unsightly, unloved study bench was not needed, offering the perfect location for a new drinks/entertainment cabinet with bar fridge below. The location meant that when entertaining, guests can easily access everything (drinks, glasses etc) without disrupting the flow of the main kitchen and preparation activities. Clever Pocket slide doors can close off the area when not in use and the led strip lights create a little bit of a magical atmosphere.

Some original Floor tiles were found allowing for the second entry to be tiled and the opening created under the seating area (other end of bench). Original flooring couldn‘t be replaced entirely so the dirty, grey grout was recoloured to match the tile colour, taking the eye away from the busyness, creating a more consistent look and allowing the floor to appear to drop away in the
background.

Another challenge was the existing cornice. To modernise the space, it was removed. A new bulkhead added over the cooking zone and the butlers pantry plus the areas that lead to the main entry and hallway were all square set.

New Feature screens were added, new lighting and switch plates were replaced along with addition of sheer curtains to all windows (blocking out green aluminium frames, security screen and unsightly views).
