This industrial-inspired 2 storey addition to an original timber workers cottage forges old, new, and everything in-between.

Stage 1 of the work (pre- Benedict Design) involved renovations to the old cottage and the addition of a garage with studio overhead on the rear lane. This allowed the owners to remain on-site and closely manage the construction of this addition.

Benedict Design assisted in turning some well-considered sketches into a resolved and rationalised set of plans & a 3D model. From here the talented owners took the reigns and their personality, attention to detail, and craftsmanship are clear in the end result. There are little details to delight all throughout!

On the ground floor, an open-plan dining and living area run seamlessly into both the rear courtyard and a newly created light well along one side. The first-floor structure bridges this lightwell allowing a post-free transition and some fantastic exposed structure.

Upstairs the master bedroom, spare room, and bathroom make the most of the elevation. The recycled brick wall on the boundary continues up to just below eye height, affording a private outlook to the Tempe roofscape and beyond.

About the

Benedict Design is a small Architectural studio with a focus on residential design.

We pride ourselves on our reputation for being approachable, honest and hard working.

We believe good communication is key to a successful project. This means keeping you informed throughout the process and presenting our ideas with generous 3D visualisations and clear documentation. Our clients and builders love this approach.

We are ‘inclusive’ architects, not ‘exclusive’. Good design should be universal and our portfolio reflects this belief.
