This home is one of four Terrace houses located on a tight, suburban site in Collingwood.  The Mid-Victorian Era 2 Storey Terrace House defines so much of the building fabric within the inner suburbs of Melbourne.  The alterations and additions to this existing dwelling acknowledge the characteristics of this building typology, in both materiality and form, and put a contemporary yet sensitive spin on them.  Large openings have been incorporated at both levels in the double storey extension at the rear, to take in the double height creeper vine on the adjacent wall, and let in natural light to the lower level.  Taking inspiration from the client’s love of Brutalist Architecture, the new burnished concrete floor (with in-slab hydronic heating) provides a linking element between the old and the new.  The in-situ concrete dining table further emphasises elements of Brutalist Architecture, and with the combination of sensitively located exposed brickwork, highlights the clients passion for raw materials.
