Choosing the Right Hamptons Shutters for Your Home
Hamptons shutters are more than a window covering – they are an architectural feature that defines light, privacy and atmosphere in your home, particularly in modern architect-led and design-driven projects.
As a specialist in custom window furnishings, Redgraves Home Fabrics offers a curated range of Hamptons-style interior shutters designed for New Zealand homes, from character villas to contemporary new builds. Precisely measured and custom-made, quality shutters add long-term value, insulation benefits, and a refined interior designer finish that suits both residential renovations and new architectural projects. Often referred to as plantation shutters, Hamptons shutters offer the same clean-lined, built-in look with a softer, coastal-inspired aesthetic.
Timber Hamptons Shutters – Classic Elegance and Warmth
Timber Hamptons shutters bring the timeless character of painted and stained wood into living spaces, creating a classic plantation shutter look that works beautifully with villa, bungalow, and coastal-inspired interiors.
Key features of timber shutters:
Timeless finishes: Available in a considered palette of paint colours and timber stains to coordinate with your interior scheme, architraves, and flooring.
Custom configurations: Choose from hinged, sliding, or bi-fold shutters in three popular louvre sizes (64 mm, 76mm, 89 mm, and 114 mm) to fine-tune light, privacy, and view-through.
Sustainably sourced timber: Premium kiln‑dried timber provides strength, stability, and a high-end furniture-grade finish.
Cord‑free operation: Designed with child and pet safety in mind.
Best suited to: Classic interiors, heritage homes, formal living rooms, and spaces where warmth, texture, and traditional detailing are important.
Polymer Hamptons Shutters – Modern, Durable and Low Maintenance
For busy households and high-moisture areas, polymer Hamptons shutters deliver the clean, painted look of timber with the benefit of being virtually maintenance-free. Engineered from advanced polymer, these shutters are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, and coastal homes where humidity and sunlight can be harsh.
Key features of polymer shutters:
Moisture and UV resistant: Won’t blister, peel, flake, or warp, making them ideal for New Zealand’s varied climate.
Effortless care: A quick wipe-down keeps them looking fresh, making them a practical choice for family living.
Flexible design options: Offered in classic white and soft neutral tones with a selection of hinge finishes, plus three louvre sizes (64 mm, 76mm, 89 mm, and 114 mm) to achieve your preferred light and privacy levels.
Smart control options: Can be paired with automated control systems in whole-home window treatment schemes for precise light and heat management.
Best suited to: Contemporary interiors, bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, and family spaces where durability and easy care are essential.
How to Choose the Best Shutters for Your Project
Selecting the right shutter type is both a design and performance decision. Redgraves’ consultants work closely with homeowners, architects, and interior designers to specify the right solution for each room and orientation.
Key considerations include:
Architectural style: Align shutter profiles, colours, and frame details with the style of the home – from coastal Hamptons and classic villa to modern, minimal architecture.
Performance needs: Clarify whether light control, privacy, thermal performance, or security is the primary goal for each space.
Material selection:
Timber for warmth, texture, and classic detailing.
Polymer for wet areas and low‑maintenance living.
For architect-led homes, it is often the combination of these materials across different zones – timber in living areas, polymer in wet areas– that delivers the most coherent result.
When professionally specified and installed, custom shutters behave more like built-in joinery than window dressings, becoming a permanent architectural layer in the home.
