Your home should feel like a refuge — warm, quiet, dry, and tailored to your lifestyle. But for thousands of New Zealanders, ageing single-glazed windows are compromising comfort, spiking energy bills, and letting in noise, damp and draughts. Whether you're battling condensation, tired joinery, or simply trying to understand your upgrade options, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
Here we spoke to Ange Toon from RetroGlaze Network*, a glazing network with over 20 years of retrofit double-glazing expertise, who shares that no one should settle for second-best in their own home.
“With over 20 years of retrofit double-glazing expertise, our network of double glazing specialists delivers customised, high-performing window solutions that suit your style, budget, and long-term goals — without the stress or guesswork.”
It’s not just about energy efficiency — it’s about how you live
While reducing heat loss is a major reason to upgrade, the true value of well-designed double glazing reaches far beyond the power bill. According to Sean Collins from Elite Double Glazing (RetroGlaze partner), the right upgrade also improves safety, noise control, and the overall feel of the home.
“We help homeowners not only meet New Zealand safety standards, but create quieter, more valuable homes. People are often surprised just how much of a difference the right glazing makes — not just in comfort, but in peace of mind.”
Ryan Edwards from The Double Glazing Company AKL (RetroGlaze partner) agrees:
“It’s also about health and function. Good glazing reduces condensation, modernises the look of your home, and helps create spaces that truly work for the way people want to live.”
Replacing existing glazing with double glazing provides opportunities to elevate the home's aesthetic.
Why some double glazing still leaves homes cold & noisy
Not all double glazing is created equal. Too many homeowners invest in upgrades, only to find their homes still cold, noisy, or full of condensation.
“I’ve had conversations with people who were sold a basic glazing option that simply didn’t meet their needs,” says Ange. “It looked like double glazing — but it wasn’t built for performance.”
RetroGlaze partners take a tailored approach to every home. Thermal performance, solar control, UV protection, and noise reduction all need to be considered — and that starts with understanding your home’s environment and how you use it.
“It comes down to expertise and attention to detail,” Sean adds. “We assess each home carefully and design a solution that’s fit for purpose. That’s where the value really lies.”
Retrofit or full replacement? Here’s how to decide
One of the most common questions homeowners ask is: should I retrofit into my existing joinery, or replace the windows entirely?
The answer depends on your current frames, your budget, and your long-term goals. A trusted professional will guide you through both options — not push you into one.
“It’s never about selling a product,” says Sean. “It’s about recommending the right solution for performance, longevity, and cost-effectiveness.”
Whether you want to preserve your home’s original character or opt for a sleek modern upgrade, RetroGlaze’s capability across both retrofit and full replacement means you get honest, expert advice — and a result that suits your vision.
“There’s almost nothing we can’t find a solution for,” adds Ryan. “We confidently handle bespoke projects others walk away from.”
Retrofitting double-glazing is an excellent way to improve indoor comfort in older homes.
Precision matters — and that starts with smart technology
Delivering lasting performance begins with precision. RetroGlaze’s industry-specific software ensures every window is measured, specified, and quoted with accuracy.
“Our software calculates all the critical dimensions so the glazing and joinery are ordered perfectly,” says Ange. “That improves quality, reduces waste, and ensures the right glass is used for each space — especially where safety is a factor.”
This also allows RetroGlaze partners to provide accurate, on-the-spot pricing and clear communication throughout the project — a big win for homeowners seeking clarity.
A consistent look, even in mixed joinery homes
Many New Zealand homes feature a mix of window styles and materials, which can make achieving a consistent look a real challenge — especially when using off-the-shelf solutions.
RetroGlaze solves this with purpose-designed aluminium and timber profiles that integrate seamlessly with almost all existing joinery.
Whether your home features timber double-hung, aluminium sliders, or something more unique, the RetroGlaze system ensures a cohesive, high-quality finish.
Retrofitting or replacing glazing with double-glazing doesn't have to change the existing character of a home.
