As expectations for sustainable, energy-efficient homes continue to grow, thoughtful hot water design is becoming an increasingly important part of creating better-performing homes.
When discussing energy-efficient homes, the focus is often on insulation, glazing, ventilation and space heating. While these elements play a vital role in overall performance, there's another system quietly working behind the scenes that deserves equal consideration: hot water.
1. Start with an Efficient Water Heating System
The biggest opportunity to reduce hot water energy use often comes from the water heater itself.
Modern heat pump water heaters use ambient air to heat water rather than relying solely on electrical resistance heating. This significantly reduces energy consumption while still providing a reliable supply of hot water for everyday living. Some heat pump water heaters can reduce water heating energy use by up to 70% compared with conventional electric systems.
For homeowners, that can mean lower running costs. For designers and specifiers, it presents an opportunity to improve the overall performance of a home without compromising comfort.
2. Consider Energy Performance Beyond the Building Envelope
Improving a home's energy performance isn't only about reducing heat loss through walls and windows. The efficiency of the appliances and systems operating within the home also has a significant impact.
New Zealand is fortunate to generate a large proportion of its electricity from renewable sources, making electrification an increasingly attractive option for residential projects. Selecting efficient electric water heating solutions can support broader sustainability objectives while helping future-proof homes for evolving energy requirements
3. Don't Overlook Insulation
Not all hot water systems perform equally when it comes to heat retention.
Poorly insulated cylinders lose heat over time, requiring additional energy to maintain water temperature. Modern systems with high-performance insulation can help minimise these standby losses and improve overall efficiency.
While insulation within the building envelope receives significant design attention, insulation within hot water systems is often overlooked despite its contribution to long-term energy performance.
4. Think About Water Efficiency Too
Reducing hot water demand can be just as important as improving how hot water is generated.
Water-efficient tapware, flow control devices and low-flow showerheads can significantly reduce hot water consumption without compromising user experience. For projects targeting improved sustainability outcomes, these small efficiencies can collectively make a meaningful difference.
5. Design for Long-Term Living
The most sustainable homes are those designed to perform efficiently for decades.
When selecting a hot water solution, it is worth considering not only current household needs but also future requirements, including changes in occupancy, energy costs and evolving sustainability expectations.
A well-chosen hot water system can deliver ongoing benefits through reduced energy consumption, lower running costs and improved environmental performance throughout the life of the home.
As residential design continues to evolve, hot water systems deserve greater attention within the wider conversation about home performance.
While they are rarely visible and often tucked away out of sight, hot water systems have a significant impact on energy use, operating costs and sustainability outcomes. By considering hot water early in the design process and selecting efficient technologies, architects, designers and homeowners can unlock meaningful gains in overall home performance.
Because sometimes the biggest opportunities for creating a better home are the systems you never see.
