About Window Shrouds products
Window surrounds give an opening a defined edge, but their proportions need to work with the whole elevation. Consider how the surround of a product such as the Altus® Window Shroud by Nulook® Windows & Doors relates to adjacent openings and the cladding joints. A deep profile casts a stronger shadow than a shallow one; drawings should show that depth as well as the front view. Keeping these relationships clear helps avoid a surround that looks disconnected from the wall.
Window Shrouds
An aluminium window shroud also needs a resolved connection to the building envelope. Request installation details for the Altus® shroud that show the fixing substrate and how water drains at the junction with the cladding. Coastal exposure in New Zealand can affect the choice of fixings and the maintenance requirements of exterior finishes. Confirm suitability for the site with the manufacturer rather than assuming every finish or fixing arrangement performs the same way.
What maintenance does a timber window shroud need?
Check the coating manufacturer's repainting or recoating guidance, including treatment of exposed end grain. Allow access to the upper surfaces, where debris can collect and moisture may linger.
Can a shroud be added to an existing window?
Have the designer or installer establish where fixings can connect to the wall structure without compromising the existing flashings. Adding a surround should not obstruct opening sashes or access for cleaning.
Do window shrouds need building consent?
Ask the local building consent authority about the proposed work before installation. Provide the fixing details and any changes to the exterior wall so the advice addresses the actual proposal.
