About Tiles products
Fired from natural clay, terracotta tiles have been used for thousands of years-yet they still feel fresh in a contemporary build. Their rich colour palette, from soft apricot through burnt umber to on-trend green terracotta tile glazes, pairs effortlessly with stone, timber and concrete. Fired at lower temperatures than porcelain, terracotta retains a breathable structure that regulates humidity, making interiors feel cooler in summer and warmer in winter. For exteriors, the material’s low embodied energy and ability to patina gracefully align with sustainable design values.

Key considerations before you buy
Absorption & sealing: Raw terracotta is porous. Factory-sealed or glazed terracotta tile options resist stains straight out of the box, while unsealed formats should be treated with a penetrating sealer before grouting. Products marketed as ‘pre-sealed’ may still require a maintenance coat every few years, especially in wet rooms.
Slip resistance: Look for an R-rating or pendulum test value that suits the intended zone-R10 for kitchens, R11 or higher for external steps and pool decks.
Load rating: Not all terracotta is created equal. Verify the breaking strength for driveways or commercial foyers, and check compliance with NZ Building Code E2/AS1 when specifying roof tiles in high-wind regions.
Colour variation: Shade differences are part of terracotta’s charm. Order at least 10 % extra to allow for blending across batches.
Design ideas & colour schemes
The warm undertones of terracotta marry beautifully with muted greens, navy cabinetry, charcoal joinery and brass tapware. For exteriors, pair Spanish terracotta roof tiles with off-white plaster walls to evoke Mediterranean villas, or contrast them against dark stained cedar for a modern NZ lodge aesthetic. Inside, consider a matte emerald wall tile offset by handmade terracotta floors for a rich, tactile palette.
Installation tips
- Always dry-lay tiles first to distribute tonal variation evenly.
- Use a white polymer-modified adhesive for glazed pieces and a rapid-set mortar for dense roof profiles.
- Opt for breathable lime-based grouts where vapour permeability is desired.
- Apply two coats of sealer 24 hours apart, then buff off excess to avoid a patchy finish.
Cleaning & maintenance
Weekly vacuuming and a pH-neutral cleaner will keep terracotta looking its best. Avoid acidic solutions-cleaning terracotta tiles with vinegar may etch the surface. For deeper cleans, low-pressure steam works, but test first in an inconspicuous area. Re-seal high-traffic zones every 3–5 years. Roof tiles should be inspected annually; gentle water-blasting removes moss without damaging the clay.
Cost guide
Pricing ranges from NZ$40 /m² for machine-pressed squares to NZ$180 /m² for hand-made, imported Spanish terracotta floor tiles. Bullnose edges and specialty trims add roughly 15 %. Installation averages NZ$70–90 /m² for floors and NZ$110 /m² for roofs, excluding scaffold or underlay. Factor sealing products at NZ$4–8 /m². Compared to concrete or stone, terracotta offers a compelling life-cycle cost thanks to its proven 50-year durability.
