The Issue of Slippery Decks

Leaves and debris tend to accumulate on the deck, especially during rain. Unless cleaned immediately, it starts providing conditions for mould, mildew, and moss to grow. The result: a slippery deck surface.

This is particularly an issue in moist climates, or if the deck lies in a shadow. A damp, dark environment offers ideal conditions for green growth. When moisture is present, even buildup of pollen can create a slippery surface.

Timber decking is the most prone to getting slippery; however, even composite decking is not entirely resistant to the conditions described above. Composite surfaces aren't impervious to mould and moss, hence those need deck anti-slip protection, too. 

What is Deck Anti-Slip 

The precondition for deck anti-slip protection is proper drainage and routine cleaning/maintenance, especially after rain and snowfall. For high traffic areas and steps, there's a range of anti-slip products, such as anti-slip tape for decking, non-slip decking paint, and various anti-slip decking inserts and mats. These products are typically based on sand or aggregates, mixed to provide extra traction. 

Types of Deck Anti-slip Products 

Anti-slip decking paint is a solution for decks that feel slippery all the time. Replacing ordinary paint with non-slip paint will secure better traction with the textured surface. It will prevent slipping even after the deck gets wet and starts to collect build up.

Anti-slip strips are a good option when a new painting is not, since they require less time and effort. These pieces of hard plastic have a grip surface and make a permanent addition that takes a few minutes to install. Anti-slip strips are durable and will hold up for years of harsh weather conditions, making an excellent choice for slippery deck steps. 

Anti-slip decking oils and stains work to eliminate a major culprit of slippery decks: moisture. A waterproof coating that covers the entire deck will prevent the water from accumulating. In order to act as a fully waterproof decking treatment, they must be reapplied every few years or seasons.

Installation of Anti Slip Decking Protection

Before applying anti-slip paint, the deck must be washed thoroughly and allowed the time to dry. The rest is a simple process that requires a roller or brush and applies in the same way as any other type of paint. Once finished, it needs sufficient time and good weather conditions to dry completely.

Decking safety strips are effortless to install by screwing decking boards. The process, however, requires special attention. Opening screw holes in each piece of decking might damage the wood beneath if done wrong. 

Anti-slip decking oils and stains apply just like any other type of coating or paint, with a brush, roller, or even a sprayer. It's important to make sure that the coating evenly covers the entire surface.  

Maintenance 

Regular washing and cleaning is an essential step in anti-slip decking treatment. Brushing and scrubbing will remove all of the algae and moss. If the green growth is persistent, it's useful to employ a professional solution that will eliminate the root of the issue. 

A pressure washer will quickly remove anything that's sticking to the deck surface. However, power washing will also strip the protective coating, so it must be followed by re-sealing. 

Things to Consider 

Anti-slip decking paint is the best solution when it's already time for refreshing the deck appeal. If the deck is new but features an unexpected slippery problem, it's probably more convenient to try with anti-slip decking oils and stains, or anti-slip strips.
