Bar Interior Design - Marine Parade, Coolangatta - 220 sqm

As the name suggests, 4 Pines X Boardriders is a collaboration between 4 Pines Brewing Co. and Boardriders, a sustainable bar and a local retail surf store located just 100 metres stroll from the beach in the beautiful town of Coolangatta, just south of the Gold Coast. Coolangatta, affectionately known as Cooly among the locals, feels like a mini-Manly with its Norfolk Pines and its deeply ingrained surf culture.

One of a number of 4 Pines bars popping up across Australia, Cradle Design had the pleasure of working on its forth sustainable bar interior design concept for the successful brewing company. In collaboration with builder, Steve Wilson from ShopFit Co. and project manager, Dan Jones from Gattica Project, the newest of these uniquely-inspired bars began to take shape.

The interior of the existing café space was a great canvas for the 4 Pines aesthetic. With a number of existing features such as the timber floor boards, weathered timber cladding on the walls, exposed ceiling services and large blackened steel framed windows, the space fitted perfectly into the 4 Pines strong sustainability ideals. Cradle was able to maintain much of the existing materials and re-use a majority of the original furniture, which is a recurring theme throughout all 4 Pines venues.

The bar was left in its initial location with its existing zinc bar top and was re-clad with recycled timber, further adding to its sustainable hospitality design. To ground the bar interior design, Cradle suspended a blacked steel gantry with expanded steel grille mesh above the bar and styled it with 4 Pines-centric items such as growler bottles, apple crates, plants, ropes, pulleys and festoon lights. The back bar utilised existing zinc-clad tops and a bespoke reclaimed timber back bar display to complete the look.

Keeping in line with the raw and honest design style of 4 Pines bars and breweries, minimal internal layering was needed with the exception of cladding of the internal columns with corrugated tin, some chalk artwork and a large mural painted on one of the existing timber clad walls. The addition of three bespoke circular timber tables with replica tolix stools by joiner Apex Timber Stools, as well as lighting by Fat Shack Vintage Lighting, helped to reinforce the unique  custom bar design that is the 4 Pines Brand.

The introduction of a Smart Brew onsite brewing system at the venue was a first for 4 Pines. Apart from the stainless-steel tank being aesthetically relevant to the bar interior design, it also produces beer that can be brewed onsite and served crisp, cold and fresh, direct to the customer.
