Design Brief

A warm and inviting space in my client’s inner-city dwelling reflects his personality and style. Therefore, earth tones with hints of green and bronze were used. Texture in the tiles, wallpaper, and timber-look cabinetry gave the kitchen depth and movement. Toned with some black cabinetry and a light Caesarstone benchtop this kitchen makes you feel welcome.

With the home being in an apartment complex, there were a few parameters of the existing kitchen we had to keep, such as the placement of the kitchen on the back wall. There was no area for dining, so a peninsular was created to meet this requirement and give more preparation space whilst creating an area to sit and converse.

With the only natural light coming from a balcony, open, clear spaces and lighting played an important part in the design.  The benchtop was relative to the height of my client and we were able to take advantage of the 2700mm high ceilings by building full-height cabinetry, to create the illusion of space.

Design Statement

• The sink, hob, and cooktop had to remain on the back wall due to plumbing and electrical constraints set by the apartment parameters.
• The placement of the dishwasher on the right-hand side of the sink was determined by the existing waste location.
• A peninsular was introduced to provide additional preparation space and a dining area.
• The microwave was positioned within the peninsular to conceal it from the lounge area.
• A dedicated coffee nook was designed to accommodate the coffee machine and other appliances, with task lighting installed within the cabinet shelf.
• Decor elements were installed at the top of the fridge and coffee nook wall to create a sense of openness and provide a display area for the client.
• Building the cabinetry to the full height of the 2700mm stud enhanced the perceived size of the kitchen and offered ample storage space.
• The Caesarstone benchtop was set at a finished height of 920mm, and the gap between the cooktop and wall cabinets was adjusted to 880mm to suit the ergonomic needs of the client's height.
