Refined Surface Lighting for High-End Architectural Spaces

In contemporary architectural design, lighting is no longer treated as a purely functional necessity. It has become an integral part of the spatial experience, shaping mood, enhancing materiality, and creating visual hierarchy within a space.

Traditionally used where recessed installation was not practical, surface-mounted luminaires have become a deliberate architectural feature in their own right.

The ZELA Décor Surface Mount Fixed 1 from Switch Lighting takes this concept further - combining refined aesthetics, exceptional optical performance, and extensive customisation in a luminaire designed and built in Nelson, New Zealand.

Designed for Architectural Spaces

Surface-mounted luminaires are commonly used in spaces where recessed lighting may not be achievable due to concrete ceilings, heritage structures, limited ceiling cavities, exposed services, or specific architectural detailing. However, they are also increasingly selected by designers who want the performance of a high-end downlight while celebrating the form of the fitting itself.

You’ll often find this style of luminaire installed in:

• Architectural homes with concrete or timber ceilings
• Hospitality venues including restaurants, wine bars, and boutique hotels
• Retail environments requiring focused accent lighting
• Gallery-style interiors and feature spaces
• Apartments and high-end multi-residential projects
• Hallways, kitchens, and living areas where a decorative lighting statement is desired

Unlike conventional surface-mounted fittings, the ZELA décor Surface Mount range has been carefully engineered to feel elegant and intentional within refined architectural interiors. Its recessed light source minimises glare while maintaining visual comfort, allowing the fitting itself to become part of the design language without overpowering the space.

A Premium Surface-Mounted Luminaire with Extensive Design Flexibility

The ZELA décor Surface Mount Fixed 1 has been developed to complement the wider ZELA architectural lighting family, allowing consistency of optics, light quality, and aesthetics throughout a project.

Built to order in Nelson, the range is highly customisable to suit both minimalist and expressive interior palettes. Designers can select from textured black or textured white trims, paired with a variety of inner finishes including black, white, copper, gold, and bronze. This flexibility allows the luminaire to either blend seamlessly into the architecture or become a subtle decorative feature within the space.

The range also includes multiple diffuser and optical variations, enabling lighting designers to tailor the light output and beam performance to the application:

• Clear Glass
• Prismatic
• Opaque
• Honeycomb
• Lens optics
• Asymmetric beam options

Available beam angles range from precise narrow beams for feature lighting through to wide general illumination options, including 9°, 15°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 55°, and 90° distributions.

This level of configurability makes the range equally suited to softly illuminating living spaces, highlighting textured finishes, or creating focused hospitality lighting effects.

Light Quality Matters

Exceptional lighting is about far more than brightness alone. The quality and consistency of light can dramatically influence how materials, finishes, and people appear within a space.

Switch Lighting places significant emphasis on colour consistency and colour rendering throughout the ZELA range. High CRI options help reveal natural colours accurately, without oversaturation or dullness, enhancing depth, texture, and visual comfort throughout an interior. The result is a more refined and authentic visual experience.

Healthy lighting principles are also central to the design philosophy behind the range. Carefully selected colour temperatures help create comfortable environments suited to modern living, while advanced driver technology delivers smooth, stable illumination without visible flicker. Flicker-free lighting can contribute to improved visual comfort, reducing eye strain and fatigue often associated with poor-quality LED lighting.

Combined with restrained beam control and soft feathered edges, the ZELA décor Surface Mount luminaires create an elevated lighting experience that feels calm, natural, and highly refined.

Smart Lighting, Sunset Dimming & Tunable White

Modern architectural lighting is increasingly expected to adapt throughout the day, supporting both functionality and wellbeing.

The ZELA décor Surface Mount range is available with advanced smart lighting control compatibility, integrating with intelligent lighting systems that allow users to create customised scenes, automate schedules, and control lighting throughout the home or commercial environment.

Switch Lighting also offers Sunset Dimming technology within the range. As the lights dim, the colour temperature gradually warms — transitioning from functional task lighting into a softer evening ambience that supports relaxation and reduces blue light exposure.

Tunable White technology provides even greater flexibility, allowing users to adjust colour temperature throughout the day to suit different tasks, moods, or circadian lighting preferences. Cooler temperatures can support focus and productivity during the day, while warmer tones create a calm and inviting atmosphere in the evening.

These technologies allow lighting to become dynamic and responsive, rather than static — enhancing how spaces feel and function across different times of day.

Lighting Design That Brings a Space Together

Selecting premium luminaires is only one part of achieving a successful lighting outcome. Placement, beam selection, glare control, layering, and control integration all play a critical role in how a space ultimately performs and feels.

Switch Lighting provides a comprehensive lighting design service to support architects, designers, builders, electricians, and homeowners through every stage of a project. From concept development through to luminaire specification and intelligent control integration, the team works collaboratively to ensure lighting enhances both the architecture and the way the space is experienced and lived in.
