‘Zen & The Art’ - The partial title of Robert Pirsig's philosophical novel, was the driving force behind this project brief. The clients desired a space that would afford their young family a tranquil quality of life, while providing them with a meditative consciousness of another time and place.

Using a minimal and simplistic design aesthetic throughout, with a prominent feature of a 360-degree glass cantilevered first floor. This highlighted the upper canopy trees, giving uninterrupted views from the living space across the natural landscape. The staircase was an opportunity to create a striking feature within the home yet blend seamlessly with its backdrop of nature, through its raw material selection and sleek design. Continuity of natural materials was showcased with the use of timbers for the claddings, screening and flooring complimenting the concrete blocks and steel. The use of weatherboards in a modern styling was introduced as a nod to the home that once stood before.

Creating functionality along with visual appeal, the house draws you in and surprises your exploration of its spaces. The tiered decking jutting out from the sloped site takes you on a journey through the Japanese inspired garden, whilst providing abundant entertaining space.

The defining and integral part of the landscape design was the circular steel entrance, framing the outdoor Japanese hot tub. A space that encapsulates a private sanctuary of years gone by and harmonises one’s inner centre.
