Having been holidaying and sailing the waters of Manly Beach, Whangaparaoa Peninsular for four generations, Flying Cloud is the result of the growing family, building a new beach house to accommodate their 3rd generation boaties and ultimately become home for the couple in their later years.
Elevated above the floodplain, the design nods to mid-century modernism with a single-level, mono-pitched form. A long, low profile to the north rises southward over the main living areas. An angular axis, expressed through a raised garden, gentle entry steps, and a deck, invites guests into an outdoor room that extends to embrace the pool and capture afternoon sun. The home's thoughtful dumbbell layout contrasts a spacious central area with more intimate sleeping quarters at either end. A low-maintenance colorsteel exterior is sculpted along the northern elevation to control sun exposure while revealing tactile interior materials. Silvered vertical cedar boards continue inside, reinforcing the seamless flow between exterior and interior spaces. The restrained interior palette, white-painted ply, concrete, gaboon plywood, eucalyptus saligna, and silvered cedar creates a natural, relaxed atmosphere. Serving as the family’s personal yacht club, Flying cloud can host wider neighbourhoof and family functions with ease. On the wall, a photograph of Flying Cloud hangs proudly, a shrine to their forefather and the boat which he built in 1952 to win the Sanders Cup.
