This steep, narrow site sits below the road and above a reserve to the west of Manly Beach. In response, the house is arranged over three levels in a long and narrow rectangular shape. The main upper level is accessed via a bridge over a landscaped courtyard between the site entry, carport and house. At its northern end, the living space opens to a cantilevered deck which projects north towards mature trees and the district views beyond. A striking cantilevered roof over the deck accentuates the feeling of height and being amongst treetops. These visually light forms are supported at the base of the house by solid stone walls enclosing a rumpus room. This lower space opens to a level lawn to the north and a private spa area to the west. When required, the spa disappears below a sliding and lockable deck. In keeping with its beach side location, the finishes and program are informal which contribute to the relaxed feel of the house and its ultimate success as a family home.

Our aim is to design site specific houses that improve the lives of our clients. Well proportioned spaces and forms which closely relate to the attributes of a site are life changing for the people who use them everyday.
Our method is to rigorously and logically analyse each site and brief and to arrange each response in an efficient and artful way. Central to the analysis and response is a thorough understanding of the client and their requirements.
Castlepeake Architects is a small, design focused, Sydney based architectural practice with many years experience in all types of residential architecture including new, altered and heritage houses.
