The challenge was to build a sustainable bespoke three bedroom home for under $400,000 NZD in Auckland. Day Architects designed this house in Cockle Bay to have low energy use through careful positioning of thermal mass, calculated shading of the sun, passive stack ventilation and high levels of insulation in the walls and glazing.
Selection of materials from an affordable and recycling perspective as well as creative use of light and colour through the house enrich the experience as one journeys through the spaces.
The indoor rooms and outdoor garden were designed as a series of overlapping spaces - the garden being considered another 'room' on the small subdivided site. A macrocarpa batten screen filters light and surrounds the garden spaces that have fruit and vegetable gardens as well as natives.
The project won the RESENE Residential Total Colour Award in 2015.
