By Chaplin Crooks Architects
A contemporary enhancement of a classic 1950’s architectural gem.
This classic 1951 architect-designed home in Christchurch suffered moderate damage in the 2010-2011 earthquakes, however this provided a perfect opportunity to both repair and refurbish the home for future generations.
The house had always been fairly original, and with many of the important homes of this period lost, the decision was made to undertake a sympathetic refurbishment. The earthquake damaged brick chimney and fireplace was carefully deconstructed, built-in joinery salvaged and a new fireplace faithfully replicating the original was constructed in lightweight materials. Internally, the home was substantially relined allowing insulation to be fitted and services to be upgraded. A new kitchen and bathroom were incorporated and the Halswell stone crazy-paved entry and outdoor terrace was re-laid. The resulting home is a wonderfully liveable example of mid-century modern architecture.
