The office-turned-showroom at Rosenfeld Kidson, designed by Roy Tebbutt of Strachan Group Architects. “There was a lot of trust from the client,” says Roy. “There was uptake on everything.”
The asymmetric window shroud is for sun control. The tilt slab concrete wall of the factory can be seen behind the building.
“We were quite careful about furniture that was selected, to complement the custom designed pieces and the oak panelling.” The curtain fabric is James Dunlop and the Tom Dixon Melt pendant is from ECC.
The interior wall is an exposed tilt panel concrete panel that has been rendered. The Menu suspension light is from Simon James.
The boardroom table was custom designed to echo the faceted detail of the wall panelling. “We worked quite closely with the cabinetmaker on how that could be achieved,” says Roy.
The black painted steel is designed to be recessive and let the turned wood pieces feature.
Positioning of windows was considered for general surveillance. “For the office staff to be able to see the comings and goings in the yard.” About 18 factory staff and four office workers use the building.
Large overhanging eaves on the building provide options for employees if they’re not sitting in the sun. “The landscape also introduces fruit trees, which adds another layer of staff wellbeing.”

Strachan Group Architects is a multiple award-winning Auckland practice. Grounded in a specific and detailed first-hand knowledge of construction the team brings a highly developed sense of craft to the task of creating sustainable buildings with precision and elegance.

The keen sense of attention that the practice brings to the interpretation of a client’s brief is equalled by a rich and complex understanding of how to respond to the subtleties of site, the impacts of the natural environment, and the many contexts within which a building must operate. To these qualities SGA adds a precise understanding of the requirements of construction, with an advanced level of experience of prefabrication and the use of digitally controlled machinery in the fabrication of building elements under tightly controlled conditions.

SGA takes pride in it's ability to communicate ideas about building as they develop in conversation with clients, consultants and contractors.
