We were very fortunate to be involved in this unique project perched in an unrivalled spot up Scarborough Hill. The site was occupied by an original timber weatherboard bungalow dating back to the horse and cart days, which had since been renovated and extended in the mid 1980’s. Post earthquake, our clients had found the spot in which they wanted to retire to, and soon moved onto the site to plan the project that would lie ahead.
After many months of planning work started on site deconstructing much of the existing structure; the top two levels were completely removed, and the bottom level stripped to not much more than a skeleton.
Extensive foundation work began including deep foundation underpins onto bedrock and a large hole in the rock to form the new stairwell. Some 19 odd concrete pours later and the new structure was firmly anchored in place.
After almost two years of construction the house sits with an understated elegance, almost hiding from the street above. Enter Scarborough house and you are immediately met with an almost perfectly centred view of Castle Rock rising from the water beyond. A beautiful cantilevered Oak stair leads you down to the main living space on the midfloor, where floor to ceiling windows wrap the Western face capturing one of the best views Christchurch can offer.
A feeling of vertigo proving too much for some, this was a project that will be remembered for many years to come, and an absolute privilege to be part of.
