A contemporary Mt Eden bungalow renovation by Rogan Nash Architects that weaves together heritage, family history and a deep connection to the landscapes of Aotearoa.

Something Borrowed, Something Green is a thoughtful renovation and extension of a heritage bungalow in Mt Eden, designed by Rogan Nash Architects for a growing family of five. Respecting the home's original character while creating generous contemporary living spaces, the project is a celebration of family history, cultural identity and a profound connection to place.

Rather than competing with the existing bungalow, the design embraces its heritage. The original street-facing home has been carefully restored, preserving its character and craftsmanship, while a contemporary rear pavilion steps gently down the site to capture sunlight, garden views and a seamless connection to outdoor living.

The architecture is deeply personal. Inspired by the owners' backgrounds, the material palette references the rugged shores of Lake Waikaremoana and the rural landscapes of New Zealand. Stone-lined walls, sculptural timber screens, green cabinetry and richly veined natural stone create interiors that feel calm, tactile and deeply connected to the landscape. Salvaged timber corbels from the husband's family farm mark the threshold between old and new, carrying memories from one generation into the next.

At the heart of the home, open-plan kitchen, dining and living spaces are designed for everyday family life. Bespoke joinery, natural materials and carefully framed views create warm, light-filled interiors that encourage connection while offering moments of privacy and retreat. Large openings blur the boundary between inside and out, allowing the garden to become an extension of the living spaces.

The result is a home that honours its past while looking confidently to the future. By weaving together heritage, landscape and personal narrative, Something Borrowed, Something Green demonstrates how architecture can preserve memory while creating beautiful, contemporary spaces for modern family living.
