The house and its sister home next door, also designed by Chris Tate, were tricky to fit onto the site and required thoughtful planning to achieve a good-sized family home.
Located in Takapuna near the coast and the city, this Kiwi modernist house is centred around a pool and courtyard – perfect for family life.
It's become a cliche but 'indoor-outdoor flow' is about as good as it gets in this cedar-clad home.
The upper level of the house floats out over a courtyard space, providing shelter from the sun and rain – ideal for parties and celebrations.
A large kitchen and living area is perfect for entertaining, with the added attraction of a swimming pool lit up like a light feature.
The large island bench is a popular part of this family home, not just for cooking but also for working, homework and socialising.
High-quality Italian granite surfaces and black timber cabinetry add beauty, texture and robustness to this busy kitchen.
The monochromatic dining/living area winds up to the upper floor via a spiral staircase. Large tiles are a functional flooring material suited to coastal living.
Open-plan living seamlessly flows from the courtyard into the interior, making this home a great place for parties.
A black spiral staircase made in steel plate is a key architectural feature.
Black and white unite – an occulus in the ceiling floods light down over the staircase.
The view down the spiral staircase is like a work of art.
The media room off the living area on the ground floor offers an alternative space for relaxation and entertainment.
The crisp white bathroom cabinetry appears to hover within this dark space, which is clad in charcoal-grey tiles.
The black-and-white colour scheme continues throughout the interior of Takapuna House, seen here in one of the bedrooms.
Staggered windows draw light into the upstairs bedrooms but, to maintain privacy, they have been recessed and arranged on an angle.
Only two of the eight faces of this home have openings to maintain privacy on a site surrounded by houses, but a clever composition ensures that the interior is filled with light.

About the
Professional

Chris Tate creates an experience in his buildings. The priority on site is discovering and maximising a building’s potential for beauty. Without a stunning site, there will be no building. He assumes an unconventional approach to architecture where function follows form, prompting adaptation for occupants.

In 2006 he created Chris Tate Architecture and completed his first project, Forest House, a glass box in Titirangi. He has since created buildings throughout New Zealand exciting emotion in viewers and occupants. Stealth, black buildings and pure white interiors, he contrasts the soft with the formidable.
