Tauranga Boys College
UNEX Systems contributed bespoke balustrade solutions to the new two-storey block at Tauranga Boys' College, designed by DGSE Tauranga. The building includes 12 classrooms, breakout spaces, collaborative zones, and a teacher’s workspace. Key features include large covered balconies and multi-purpose outdoor bleachers, integral to modern learning environments.
UNEX’s custom-designed postless balustrades, featuring sleek vertical lines, were used on balconies and stairways. Architect Tara Cooper notes that the balconies are essential to extending indoor learning spaces, enhancing functionality and connection to the outdoors, even in poor weather.
The project required higher load capacities than typical residential balconies, and UNEX worked closely with the design team to meet engineering and aesthetic requirements. UNEX supplied 103 lineal metres of balustrades, all with all custom designs meeting Ministry of Education requirements.
The fine lines of the balustrades complement the building’s facade and contribute to the project’s success, which was recognised with a win in the 2024 Te Kāhui Whaihanga Local Architecture Awards.
