On a very steep site in Wanaka, this modest holiday home is elevated up on poles, like a kea bird perched in the trees.
The shape and form of the house is defined by the steep slope and a neighbour's drainage easement under the decking.
While the site is a work in progress for the family (who bought the plot of land off the internet), Te Kea Hut looks as if it's been on the site for years.
The living area is lit by huge sliding doors that leads onto a small decked area. The owners had bespoke sofas made to match the green and orange on the exterior.
New Zealand pine plywood creates a warm and inviting kitchen and dining area. The galley-style kitchen features open shelving like you'd find in a DOC tramping hut.
Emerald green tiling perfectly complements the warm timbers of the interior.
Open shelves in the master bedroom continues the 'humble hut' aesthetic.
The master bedroom has no door, just a turning in the entry to provide privacy.
The top-lit loft bedroom doubles as a play space for the owners' young children.
The exterior is inspired by the colours of the Kea – the native parrot with its rich green and orange plumage.
The young family in their dream holiday home.
