Durability and maintenance

Both materials are built to last, but they perform differently over time.

Quality solid timber doors are remarkably durable and can provide decades of service when properly manufactured and finished. Like any natural material, timber responds to changes in temperature and humidity, which may result in minor seasonal movement. Proper sealing helps protect against steam and moisture in busy kitchens.

One of timber's biggest advantages is its repairability. Small dents, scratches, and signs of wear can often be sanded out and refinished, allowing the doors to be restored rather than replaced.

Aluminium kitchen cabinet doors excel in environments where moisture, heat, and heavy daily use are common. They won't warp, swell, crack, or rot, making them an excellent choice for high-use kitchens or homes in humid climates.

While aluminium is exceptionally durable, significant damage generally requires replacing the affected component rather than repairing it.

Sound and function

Ever noticed how different materials sound when you close cabinet doors? Timber doors have a solid, muffled thud that feels substantial. Aluminium doors can be noisier, creating a sharper closing sound unless fitted with quality soft-close hinges or dampers.

Both materials work well functionally and offer excellent customisation options. You can create unique profiles with timber, add decorative elements, or incorporate glass panels in countless ways. Timber can also be stained to any shade you need.

Aluminium doors provide equally impressive design possibilities. The frames can be powder-coated in virtually any colour, and there are many glass options available, from clear to frosted to textured varieties. These factors mean aluminium-framed glass kitchen doors can create striking visual effects while maintaining that sleek, modern look.

Sustainability

If environmental impact is an important consideration, both materials have strengths worth exploring.

Responsibly sourced timber is renewable, biodegradable, and stores carbon throughout its lifetime, making it one of the most sustainable building materials available. Choosing timber certified through recognised forestry programmes helps ensure responsible harvesting practices.

Another major advantage is longevity. Solid timber doors can often outlast the cabinetry itself because they can be sanded, repainted, or re-stained to suit future renovations instead of being discarded.

Aluminium has a different sustainability story. Although manufacturing new aluminium requires significant energy, the material is almost infinitely recyclable without losing its structural properties. Many aluminium products already contain a high percentage of recycled content, and their exceptional lifespan helps offset their environmental footprint.

The cost factor

Budget naturally plays an important role when selecting kitchen cabinet doors.

In many cases, timber kitchen cabinet doors have a lower initial cost, particularly when using readily available timber species and straightforward designs. Over the years, some homeowners may choose to refinish the timber to refresh its appearance, extending its lifespan without replacing the doors.

Aluminium kitchen cabinet doors generally involve a higher upfront investment. However, their resistance to moisture, wear, and everyday damage means ongoing maintenance costs are typically very low.

When comparing costs, it's worth considering more than the purchase price alone. Installation, hardware, maintenance, and the expected lifespan of the product all contribute to the overall value of your investment.

Which cabinet door should you choose?

So which should you choose? Here are some scenarios to consider:

Choose timber doors if:

• Appreciate the warmth and individuality of natural materials.
• Prefer traditional, coastal, farmhouse, or timeless kitchen designs.
• You enjoy the idea of being able to refresh or change the look later.
• Value craftsmanship and customisation.
• Looking for a lower initial investment.

Choose aluminium cabinet doors if:

• Prefer clean, contemporary design.
• Want a highly durable, low-maintenance material.
• Have a kitchen exposed to humidity or heavy everyday use.
• Are designing a modern or industrial-inspired home.
• Want long-term durability with minimal upkeep.

Both timber doors and aluminium cabinet doors can create exceptional kitchens that combine style with everyday functionality.

If you're undecided, viewing samples in person is often the easiest way to make your decision. Seeing the materials under different lighting, feeling their textures, and comparing finishes side by side provides a much better understanding than photographs alone.

For many homeowners, the ideal solution is a combination of both—using timber to introduce warmth and natural character while incorporating aluminium to create crisp architectural detail and lasting durability.
