Wood benchtop vs stone benchtops: which is the better choice for your kitchen?

While appearance is often the first thing people consider, selecting between wood benchtops and stone benchtops involves much more than aesthetics. Factors such as cost, sustainability, sourcing, durability, maintenance, and even health considerations all play an important role in finding the right fit for your home.

Comparing the overall cost

It's a common misconception that timber is always the more affordable option. In reality, premium solid wood benchtops can be priced similarly to engineered stone, particularly when they're custom-made and handcrafted.

The cost of stone benchtops varies significantly depending on the material. Natural stones such as granite and marble typically sit at the higher end of the market, while engineered quartz often falls into the mid-range.

Although the initial investment can be comparable, solid timber benchtops often provide greater long-term value. Unlike stone, timber can be sanded and refinished multiple times, allowing it to be restored instead of replaced if it becomes worn or damaged.

Installation should also be factored into your budget. Stone is extremely heavy and requires specialist equipment and experienced installers, which can increase labour costs. Timber is generally easier to work with, making installation more straightforward without compromising on quality.

Sustainability and environmental impact

When sustainability is a priority, wood benchtops offer several clear advantages.

Responsibly sourced timber is a renewable resource that stores carbon throughout its lifetime. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide, and that carbon remains locked within the finished benchtop for many years. Timber also has an exceptionally long lifespan because it can be repaired, refinished, and repurposed rather than discarded.

By comparison, producing stone benchtops has a greater environmental footprint. Quarrying natural stone requires significant energy, large-scale machinery, and landscape disruption. Many stone products also travel thousands of kilometres before reaching New Zealand, adding transportation emissions to the overall impact. Engineered stone involves energy-intensive manufacturing and commonly contains synthetic resins that cannot be recycled in the same way as timber.

Our bamboo benchtops take sustainability even further. Because bamboo regenerates in as little as five years, it offers an environmentally responsible alternative while still delivering impressive strength and durability.

Understanding where your materials come from

Knowing the origin of your benchtop materials helps you make a more informed decision.

New Zealand is home to outstanding plantation timber, while premium hardwoods such as American Oak are sourced from responsibly managed international forests where growth continues to exceed harvest rates. Choosing sustainably certified timber supports responsible forestry and helps minimise environmental impact.

Stone materials often have a much longer journey. While some granite is sourced from Australia, many premium marbles originate from Europe, and engineered stone is manufactured around the world. Compared with timber, sourcing information and sustainability certifications are often less transparent.

Selecting locally crafted solid wood benchtops also supports New Zealand manufacturers and reduces the overall carbon footprint of your kitchen project.

Health and food safety

Both wood benchtops and stone benchtops are perfectly suitable for food preparation when properly finished and maintained.

Timber naturally contains antimicrobial properties, with research showing that many bacteria survive for shorter periods on wood than on some synthetic surfaces. Our high-build resin finish creates a durable, food-safe protective layer while allowing the natural beauty of the timber to remain visible.

Stone surfaces, particularly engineered products, are generally non-porous and highly resistant to bacteria. Natural stone requires regular sealing to maintain this protection.

One important consideration is the manufacturing process. Fabricating engineered stone can expose workers to crystalline silica dust during cutting, which has led to stricter health and safety regulations across the industry.

Heat resistance: the hot pot reality check

Every benchtop material has its limitations.

With wood benchtops, hot pots, pans, and baking trays should never be placed directly on the surface. Excessive heat can damage the protective finish and potentially mark the timber underneath. Using trivets, heat mats, or coasters is the simplest way to protect your investment.

While stone benchtops generally tolerate heat better, they are not completely immune to damage. Rapid temperature changes can crack some natural stones, and even engineered stone manufacturers recommend avoiding direct contact with extremely hot cookware.

Maintenance and long-term care

Different materials require different levels of maintenance.

Natural stone benchtops typically require periodic sealing and should be cleaned using products designed specifically for stone. Acidic foods and cleaning products can permanently etch surfaces such as marble.

The maintenance required for timber benchtops depends largely on the finish. Oil-finished surfaces benefit from occasional re-oiling, while resin-coated timber requires very little ongoing maintenance. If scratches or dents occur over time, they can usually be repaired and refinished, allowing the benchtop to look like new again.

Rather than replacing the entire surface, timber gives you the opportunity to restore it for many years of continued use.

Which benchtop is right for you?

The ideal benchtop depends on how you use your kitchen and what matters most to you.

If your priority is a highly durable, low-maintenance surface and you don't mind the envireonmental trade-offs, a stone benchtop may suit your lifestyle.

If you appreciate natural materials, value sustainability, and want a surface that develops character while remaining repairable, a wood benchtop is an excellent choice.

Many homeowners are now combining both materials within the same kitchen. Stone can provide a practical workspace for food preparation, while a timber island or breakfast bar introduces warmth, texture, and a welcoming focal point.

Think about how your kitchen functions every day, not just how it looks in photos. The right material should complement both your lifestyle and your home's design.
