Window and Door Hardware
- The first thing one notices when walking into a place is the entrance; the entry door plays a vital part in making an impression, followed by the window and interior. This is why, apart from being highly functional, door hardware (hooks, knobs, etc.) needs to be pleasing to the eye and durable too. The same is the case for window hardware. Architectural or decorative hardware is used in home construction, such as hinges, handles, catches, door knockers, locks, cabinet handles etc. The core elements within this umbrella are doors and windows.
What Does Door And Window Hardware Entail
Interior door hardware includes door hooks, pull handles, and doorknobs that provide different functions, such as dummy, passage, or privacy. Exterior hardware such as entry sets and deadbolts come in single-cylinder and double-cylinder functions.
Window hardware consists of more functional components, such as latches and locks, sash weights, chains, cords, and window handles.
Doors and windows without hardware are nothing. This additional equipment is required to make them functional.
Buying Hardware
When purchasing door hardware and window hardware, one needs to consider the following aspects:
- When getting an entry door lockset, check the security grade. There are three designated levels by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Grade 1 being the highest, Grade 2 providing moderate security, and Grade 3 offering basic safety
- The thickness of 1 3/8 inches is standard for an interior door, and the standard of the exterior doors is 1 ¾. Know whether the hardware will work with the door's thickness
- Search for entry-lock designs that prevent break-ins, for example, prying, drilling, bumping, and picking
- The borehole size determines the hardware size. Typically, deadbolts require a borehole of 1 ½ or 2 1/8 inches in diameter. Lever handles usually need a hole of 2 1/8 inches in diameter
- Security hardware is provided for exterior doors by entry hardware.
- Dummy hardware serves a decorative purpose, such as doorknobs, or lever pulls
Different Kinds Of Hardware
Usually, when someone hears the word hardware, they think of window handles, door bolts, door and window hinges, and so on.
But the hardware category is very vast and includes:
Window Stays
A window stay is a bar that clutches a hinged window open and in place.
Trim
The trim is also called rose and is an ornamental plate attached to the door under the doorknob or lever.
Sash Lifts
A sliding sash window opens when a glass panel glides along a track and stacks in front of the other. But they don't have window handles like sliding windows or sliding glass doors do.
Backplate
It is installed with the latch and a rounded corner faceplate between the faceplate and latch bore (the hole where the latch enters the door).
Window Cranks
Different windows operate differently; for example, casement windows and awning windows open and close on a hinge. Window cranks provide a new way: instead of using traditional handles, some cranks fold and turn out instead. And, they also act as an extra lock!
Chassis
Chassis determines if the lock is for combined Interior, privacy (bed & bath), or passage (hall & closet.)
Other Things To Consider
There are several things one should consider when buying door and window hardware:
Types of Door Pulls
A door pull may be a minor interior feature in the grand scheme of things. However, it can make all the difference. Thus, here are some unusual types of door pulls and their functions:
Flush Pulls
These are flush into the door, meaning they do not extend out externally as most traditional door handles do. They can be custom-made and provide a vintage yet modern look to the room. Moreover, they are usually considered part of sliding door gear because they allow for a grip perfect for the necessary movement.
Bin/Cup Pulls
These pulls are essentially cup-like shapes that can be used to pull doors open. They are pretty unique and heavy looking, making them a popular choice for people with extravagant tastes.
Essential Door Accessories
Most door features are purely functional, but that doesn't mean that they cannot be matched with an establishment's exterior and interior décor. For example, when getting door closers and door stops, one can choose from various types and colours. Thus, by choosing a similar style of these features, one can get a functional but aesthetically pleasing door.
Moreover, for the main door, doorbell pushes are supposed to be a stand-out feature that one cannot usually find anywhere else in the house. Therefore, pick out a doorbell push that matches the other door accessories.
Care and Maintenance
Doors and windows are a necessity. There must be a safe way to enter buildings and openings for sunlight and air to prevent humidity.
These features are also there for aesthetic purposes. With time, interior designers and architects have started using these home elements to enhance the ambience.
Windows and doors hardware materials play a vital role in keeping them intact. If one of the accessories gets damaged, then the entire door or window suffers. Here are few ways to prevent those mishaps:
- Use stainless steel instead of aluminium alloy for sliding door and windows hinges
- Specification, type, and hardware fittings performance should be up to national standards
- Hardware accessories should be fitted after the door, windows and doors lock, handle, and so on. To ensure proper positioning and flexibility, place the hardware in the window frame after the assembly
- Install rolling or double pulleys for sliding windows with widths wider than 1m or double glazing windows and doors
The mounting hardware that comes with fastening screws should have metal liners, and the liner's thickness should be 2x greater than the distance between each fastener. However, it should not be attached to non-lining metallic or plastic profiles.
