The Ashburton Civic Centre and Library, Te Whare Whakatere at Baring Square East, forms part of the revitalisation work within the CBD. The modern building incorporates heritage and cultural elements and the heritage listed Pioneer Hall has been preserved inside the children's library.
Earthquake strengthening and sustainability were key drivers in the design and development of this project. An engineered timber superstructure reinforced with post-tensioned steel cables and brackets will not only ensure the building is able to rock during an earthquake and settle back in place - but the timber also contributes to the sustainability of the building.
The building was awarded excellence in the 'Sustainable Building Property Award' by the Property Council New Zealand - incorporating timber, two bores providing an energy efficient water heating/cooling system, LED lighting, solar shading and a high-performance facade.
An aluminium and steel mesh screen engineered, manufactured and installed by Thermosash stands at the entrance to the building. It forms an 'A' for Ashburton and is designed to resemble a silo or stainless-steel dairy tank acknowledging the importance and contribution of the agricultural/dairy industry to NZ.
