A retreat immersed in nature, this project carefully balances the built environment with its surroundings. Thoughtfully designed to sit lightly on the land, it embraces modular construction to create a sustainable, energy-efficient home that integrates seamlessly with its natural setting.

From concept through to detailed design and building consent, we worked closely with Modubuild, a leader in modular construction in New Zealand, to refine every aspect of the home. By integrating prefabrication from the outset, we ensured a streamlined process that maintained design integrity while enhancing sustainability and construction efficiency. Every decision—from energy-efficient materials to spatial planning—was made with durability, liveability, and environmental impact in mind.

Inspired by the rugged beauty of Karangahake Gorge, the home features a natural material palette that blends effortlessly into the landscape. Timber cladding weathers gracefully over time, while floor-to-ceiling windows capture sweeping views of the surrounding native bush. Elevated above the ground, the structure minimises site disturbance, reinforcing its connection to the land while reducing its environmental footprint.

Inside, a warm, nature-inspired interior design mirrors the tones and textures of the forest, creating a tranquil living space. Thoughtfully designed interiors ensure that even within a modular framework, the home feels unique, inviting, and deeply personal—crafted for both function and relaxation.

This project is a testament to how modular architecture can create sustainable, high-quality homes that enhance, rather than compete with, their surroundings.
