LERNA, Ballast Point
The Lerna project, photographed for Forbes Global Properties, exemplifies a sophisticated synthesis of heritage conservation and contemporary design within a quintessential classic architectural framework. Originally constructed between 1881 and 1882, this distinguished home is situated on a landmark site at Ballast Point, and has been thoughtfully restored to honour its historical significance while seamlessly integrating modern extensions. Recognised with the 2017 Marrickville Medal for Best Development of a Period Home, the project underscores a commitment to preserving architectural legacy amidst evolving residential needs.
The restoration involved meticulous attention to detail, maintaining the visibility of all façades of the heritage-listed residence. The addition of two contemporary pavilions at opposing corners of the original structure ensures unobstructed views of the home in its entirety from all vantage points, whilst creating a protected courtyard that offers a serene sanctuary shielded from harbour winds. The integration of an entry forecourt, through the retention of the original ‘lean-to’ kitchen walls and chimney, further enhances the historical narrative. This harmonious blend of restoration and extension delivers an inviting environment where art and natural landscape are celebrated within an elegant and functional setting.
