Merivale Retreat

Holmwood Retreat in the leafy suburb of Merivale in Christchurch brings together luxurious, beautifully designed and built outdoor spaces, framed by contemporary architecture, and anchored by a protected heritage tree.

Xteriorscapes were engaged by their clients to develop a carefully considered landscape concept, which made the most of the relatively small garden area. We were excited to face the challenge of incorporating a swimming pool, spa pool, outdoor fire, outdoor terraces, and shade structures into the garden, while allowing plentiful spaces for movement and socialising.

On the west side of the property, a stunning protected Camperdown Elm tree offered a great opportunity as an integral feature of the garden. This became the centrepiece around which the garden’s design unfolded. We were careful to give this tree ample ‘breathing space’ both aesthetically and physically, achieved by keeping the design as simple as possible. This ensured councils’ requirements for the tree were met while also allowing the surrounding outdoor spaces to feel as generous as possible.

The design utilises a carefully chosen palate of high-quality materials, with clean lines and a minimalist approach to detailing - echoing the beautiful, contemporary home architecture. Planting design was inspired by lush, evergreen colours, offering vibrancy against the deciduous Elm in winter.
