In Association with Carole Whiting Studio

Adopted a dignity of simplicity. The existing house is elegant and simple, less adorned than a Victorian.

Maintained a similar language, the double pitched roof, window seats and bay windows, the fenestration of the rear doors, are abstracted Edwardian features. Rather than replicate we chose a complimentary opposite approach. Keeping the new decidedly different from the old, but maintaining a link by size, scale and proportion. The new is a different building. Existing was never a two-storey home. Care given not to overwhelm the old. Insertion into the roof space hints at what a second storey might have originally been.

The proposed design takes into account the needs of a new generation of occupants with a very specific list of requirements, which reflect the way they would like to live. The proposed design attempts to link the interior and exterior living spaces and gain maximum natural light into the interior of the building as well as maximise the amenity of the occupants. The rear yard is an important entertainment / living area and will be used as an extension of an interior living space. Natural light is brought into the interior space via large, glazed openings within box frames. The upper level skylights may be opened to allow the heat that has risen to that point to escape as well as catch the cooler south- east breezes when necessary. Access to light and good cross ventilation is a key part of this design response.

About the
Professional

Whiting Architects is an Architecture and Interior Design studio with over 25 years of experience.

Director Steven Whiting’s qualifications in both Interior Design and Architecture define the firms’ signature style and form a design philosophy that centers on the premise that there is no separation between disciplines.

The practice views each project holistically as Architects, Interior Designers, and willing collaborators with other disciplines. Producing work that transcends fashion and remains contemporary and robust for years to come.

Integral to their philosophy is the firms’ ability to consider all aspects of the design. Each project is explored thoroughly in 3D from concept to completion. Developed as an exterior object with corresponding interior volume complete with hard landscaping, finishes, joinery and furniture. Each project is a direct response to the site and existing conditions. As a result creating personalized, aesthetically beautiful, bespoke design solutions.
